IMTO Excavations

The complete archaeological sequence of the site of Salut has been singled out by the Italian Mission to Oman (IMTO), directed by Alessandra Avanzini. The Mission of the University of Pisa started its investigations in March 2004, in agreement with the Office of HE the Adviser to HM the Sultan for Cultural Affaires of Muscat and with the contribution of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After a preliminary deep sounding (2004) to verify the stratigraphical sequence, the IMTO realized the great potential value of the site and its importance for ancient history of Oman and for Eastern Arabia.

Since 2005, two archaeological campaigns are conducted annually. The rich and interesting results of excavations at the site and the surrounding plain will be exposed in this Virtual Museum.
